How to Start a Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation(MHKO)

Updated: Dec 10, 2021

On January 1st, 2019, Microenterprise home kitchen operations (AB 626) went into effect, allowing people in California to start and operate restaurants from their homes. This new law is the first of its kind in the nation. Since its go-live, there have been hundreds of MHKOs sprouting across California.

Although, the law has passed at the California level. Policymakers gave counties the power to opt in or out. As of December 2021, 7 counties (listed below) have opted in and are now accepting applications and issuing permits. If you are interested in starting your own MHKO, click the county's name, and it will redirect you to the respective counties' website, where you can find the granular application and permit details.
